Walk Classifications
This is the walks classification for Stockport Ramblers, contained in our current printed programme.
Walks Classification. (If in doubt, contact the walk leader).
The letters (A,B,C,D) indicate the pace of the walk, and usually the distance. (See detailed descriptions below).
“+” indicates the walk is longer, hillier or harder than usual.
“-” indicates the walk is shorter, flatter or easier than usual.
“+” and “-” do not affect the pace of the walk.
Usually “B” walks average no more than 2 mph, including stops.
“A” walks are generally faster, “C” & “D” walks slightly slower.
D - Leisurely - (usually evening walks) - 4 miles maximum.
C - Leisurely - usually between 6-8 miles.
Local Footpath Walks are C walks which start from a point accessible by public transport, are in the general Stockport area, and are designed to raise awareness of local footpaths.
Suitable for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended.
Terrain: Includes unsurfaced country paths that may be narrow, uneven, muddy or overgrown, and obstructions such as stiles, narrow bridges, stepping stones and steps. May be hilly, with a few ascents and descents.
Pace: Slow or moderate pace.
B - Moderate - usually between 10-12 miles.
Suitable for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential.
Terrain: As C walks, but with some sustained climbs and perhaps some moderate walking on open hillsides or moorland.
Pace: Moderate pace; could include walks on easier terrain taken at a brisk pace.
A - Strenuous - usually between 15-20 miles.
Suitable for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. People in doubt about their fitness are advised to contact the walk leader in advance.
Terrain: Includes rough country and mountains, a few long or lots of short ascents and descents on rough paths and across open country.
Pace: Moderate or brisk pace; could include walks on moderate terrain taken at a brisk pace.
